We left Santorini on the slow boat (took about 3 hours) to Crete (which we heard was fabulous) and were sorely disappointed! The weather was grey and pouring with rain. Anyway, we caught the bus (3 hour journey) to the town near where we were booked in for two nights. We arrived in the town, Chania, to discover there were no buses to anywhere near our hotel and we would have to catch a taxi. To complicate matters, Mark discovered that we had lost the credit card. Big Bugger.

We managed to scrape together enough cash to pay for the taxi to our apartment / hotel room, which was LOVELY, but unfortunately in the middle of nowhere! By this stage we were starving as well, so the kind man who ran the hotel took pity on us and loaned us his car to take into the “nearby” village…. which was pretty much deserted. Sigh. We bought a loaf of bread, a tomato, some cheese and some ham, which was to be our dinner, and then our breakfast and lunch for the next day.

We decided one night in solitude was more than enough for both of us so packed up our gear the next day and caught a cab back in to Chania. We then caught the bus back to Heraklion (or Iraklio) and the fun of finding somewhere to stay for our second night on Crete began. P!ssing down with rain, no cagoules, no money, hungry, nowhere to stay – it was pretty rubbish. But, we managed to get another credit card working and then found an internet cafe! Things were looking up!

We found a decent looking place to stay in (Kastro Hotel) and opted to wander around there to see if we could get it a bit cheaper than on the net. Unfortunately, the map on the net wasn’t correct and we ended up doing bog laps around Heraklion for AGES in the rain with our backpacks looking for the damn place. Every time we asked someone where it was they pointed us in another direction. I mean, if you don’t know, then just say! Don’t just point in any goddamn direction and send people on a wild goose chase! Breathe… Luckily, it just so happened that after we had a bite to eat and set off on the search again we found the hotel! Geez! Bout time!
