Meadowdale students in search of an amazing look into the ancient wonders of Greece

Finally, that day has arrived. This morning six students from Meadowdale High School, two alumni and one teacher boarded a plane to Athens, Greece. “We’re about to embark on the educational trip of a lifetime,” said photography teacher Jill Van Berkom, who is going on the trip. “The students and their parents are so excited for this amazing look into the ancient wonders of Greece.” Traditionally, the Photo Club at Meadowdale High School offers a travel opportunity to students.
“We chose Greece this year because it has a strong tie-in to the curriculum in our ninth and tenth-grade honors classes, where they’re learning about important writings like the Odyssey and Iliad and other foundational writings from ancient times,” Van Berkom said.
The tour starts and ends in Athens. In Greece, the travelers will explore legendary sites of ancient Athens, including the Olympic stadium, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parthenon, the Plaka district and the Temple of Athena Nike. They’ll also tour Delphi, Argolida and Pilos. Half way into the trip, the group will go on a four-day cruise that weaves through the Sea of Crete with stops in Mykonos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, just off the coast of Turkey.
Each of the students has the option to earn educational credits while on tour. And, as most students going on the trip have taken or will be taking photography, they’ll also be working on their photo techniques. “We’ll all be definitely carrying our cameras around and taking plenty of pictures and talking about different angles, different shots and trying to be really creative and do some assignments while we’re there.”
